------
On March 3, 1898, dairyman Jacob Schmidt was transporting 60 gallons of milk to Allegheny, Pennsylvania. At some point during his journey while traveling on the reserve township road, his wagon fell over an embankment.
After rolling over several times, Schmidt, with his horse and wagon, came to a crashing halt at the bottom of the hill. The wagon landed upside down and the milk, which was in two tanks, spilled. Schmidt was knocked unconscious and lay in a pool of the liquid in the wagon. The milk was about 10 inches deep, and his head and shoulders were completely submerged.Â
If it hadn't been for a farmer who had witnessed the accident and come to the rescue, he would have surely drowned.
