In 1925, a heartwarming story was published about 10-year-old Eva Boran and her pet duck. Eva wanted to contribute to the community chest—a local charity fund—but had no money to give. Instead, she brought her duck to school and presented it to her teacher as her contribution.
At a luncheon for the charity's workers, the duck was auctioned off symbolically, one part at a time. The bill brought $35, and the feet $20 each; by the time every "part" was sold, the total reached a staggering $540. The buyers then relinquished their claims and returned the beloved pet to Eva—thankfully, all in one piece.
