The Four-Legged Paperboy of Albany Who Saved the Day in 1850
According to a delightful story published on April 4, 1850, a dog belonging to a paper carrier who delivered for the Albany Knickerbocker in Albany, New York, had become a local legend. This canine, described as excelling in "sagacity," was more than just a companion. Every day, he would trot alongside his master, helping to serve a route of more than 600 subscribers.
One day, the human carrier was struck by illness and couldn't complete his deliveries. With hundreds of residents waiting for their daily news, it seemed the route would be left unserved. However, the dog was not about to let his community down. In an incredible display of intelligence and duty, he undertook the route himself. Accompanied by an office boy who carried the stack of papers, the dog led the way. He flawlessly navigated the familiar path, stopping at the house of every single subscriber.
The original report marveled that "he did not miss a subscriber," a feat of perfect memory and dedication. In a final, humorous tribute, the article noted that with his flawless performance, the dog "showed himself even more faithful than some human carriers!" It just goes to show that sometimes the hardest workers may be the ones with four paws and a tail!
